. .
Online worlds allow us to create our own (cyber)self and be all we want to be. In various online computer games we can have different identities of some fictitious creatures, and in chat rooms and social networks possess and reflects their identity or maybe just identity we want to reflect. Digital environment such as Second Life provides us with the possibility of being something or someone else beside real us that we are in real environment. People can choose avatars to represent themselves, and slip in and out of character. In Second Life Avatars can communicate via local chat or global instant messaging (IM). Chatting is used for localized public conversations between two or more avatars, and is visible to any avatar within a given distance. IMs are used for private conversations, either between two avatars, or among the members of a group, or even between objects and avatars. So, with choosing avatar and in conversations with others individual can represent her or himself like she or he wants.
Virtual life allows people to have presence in several windows and contexts simultaneously. But contrary to opportunity of leaving the identity behind virtual world can’t immerse us completely. Our body, which is also part of our identity can’t be left behind despite increasing interaction between body and digital technology. So, even though we can forget on our true identity and be something or someone else in the virtual world, the immersion is limited with real environment or world we are living in the moment being present in the virtual world, where our body with pressing on mouse or using the glove device reminds us on this.
. .
The example of complete immersion, where the body is left behind we can see in the movie Avatar, where Jake, who is paralyzed in the real world (The real world is referring to the world of human species in the movie), enters the “Na’vi” world on Pandora with avatar and lives new identity and is disembodied from his real paralyzed body and embodied in the not paralyzed body of avatar. We can clearly see how the concept of disembodiment is represented with each transmission from his body to avatar’s body.
